Journals : England and Mexico, 1825-1837.

Three journals covering the years 1826-1837. Journal (1825-1826) is a typewritten transcript of Waldeck's account of his trip from England to Mexico in 1825. Entries document Waldeck's preparations for his voyage, his arrival at Tampico, and his work in the silver mines at Tlalpujahua. He describes the Mexican terrain, climate, food, flora and fauna, and customs, and comments on the drawings he is making of the Indians at their daily chores. Unhappy in his job, Waldeck moves to Mexico City in 1826. Journal (1826-1829) is a ms. in Waldeck's hand documenting his 4 years in Mexico City after leaving Tlalpujahua. During that time, Waldeck worked on his drawings and gave art classes. His entries record the mundane details of everyday life, his finances, and his associations with various people such as Charles Nebel, from whom he purchased several Indian manuscripts. Journal (1829-1837) is a photocopy of two British Museum mss. (Add. 41684 and 41685) decribing his travels in the Yucatán. Waldeck documents his visits to Xochicalco, Teotihuacán, Tabasco, Palenque, Mérida, Uxmal, and Chichén Itzá, where he prepares drawings of the Indian antiquities and ruins. Entries describe his own drawings as well as the Indian pictorial mss. he acquired. Miscellaneous notes deal with miles travelled, Indian place names, observations on rivers, palm forests, and the climate.

The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. The Newberry’s establishment came about because of a contingent provision in the will of Chicago businessman Walter L. Newberry (1804-68), which left what later amounted to approximately $2.2 million for the foundation of a “free, public” library on the north side of the Chicago River, if his two children died without issue. After the deaths of Mr. Newberry’s daughters and then, in 1885, of his widow, t...
